Choose the Right Metal and Metal Finish

websitebuilder • Jul 27, 2017

There is a wide variety of metals that can be used in residential and commercial projects. Once you’ve determined what you will build, you can decide what kind of metal you want to use.

Every contractor knows the importance of choosing the right metal fabricator. The main goal of any contractor is to please his or her clients, and the metal fabricator you choose can have a huge impact on the turnout of your project.

Once you’ve chosen your metal fabricator , though, you still have a few important choices to make. First and foremost, you need to know what kind of metal you would like to use for your project. Of course, this choice will depend heavily upon what you are building, but you’ll have a bit of creative freedom as well.

There is a wide variety of metals that can be used in residential and commercial projects. Once you’ve determined what you will build, you can decide what kind of metal you want to use and how thick you need that metal to be.

Formability

The first thing you’ll want to consider when you’re trying to choose what metal to use for your project is formability. Can the metal be formed into different shapes easily? Sure, there are special tools that can make metal-forming easier, but you might want to choose a metal that is easily formable nonetheless.

Weldability

If your project is going to include welding, you want to make sure the metal you choose has good weldability. If you choose something that is easy to weld, you’ll be able to cut down on prep time. You’ll also probably save a bit of money because you won’t have to buy advanced welding equipment.

Strength

Metals in general are known for being strong and durable, but depending on your project, you might find yourself in need of an especially strong material. If you’re not sure what kinds of metals are known for outstanding strength and durability, don’t be afraid to ask your metal fabricator.

Finishes

Once you choose what kind of metal you want to use, the next step is choosing what kind of finish you want. There are tons of finish options to choose from, and this choice will most likely come down to what you think looks best. Make sure you know what your options are and then choose according to your preferences.

Sandblasting

If you’re going for a uniform, matte finish, sandblasting is a great option. This technique involves blasting your metal with sand at a very high speed. While sandblasting may sound like an odd way to get your metal looking smooth, it really works.

Brushed

A brushed finish also creates a matte look, and the finish also looks as though a paint brush has been used to smooth out the metal. A brushed finish is very clean looking, so if you want something elegant and unblemished, this is definitely an option you should consider.

Polished

If you want a finish that is sure to grab the attention of anyone who walks by your finished product, polished is the way to go. A polished finish is reflective and shiny. If you decide to go with this kind of finish, though, be aware that a polished finish will show fingerprints or grease a lot more easily than other finishes.

Hammered

Last but not least, we have the hammered finish. This finish is just what it sounds like: it looks like it’s been hammered. If texture is your goal, then a hammered finish is what you want. This finish is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

No matter what project you’re working on, there is a metal out there for you. If you’re having trouble choosing the right metal or the right finish for your project, don’t be afraid to talk to your metal fabricator. He or she can tell you everything you need to know about metal and help make sure your project is a success.
